The Still Waters

Doubt

Even in seasons of doubt, God meets honest questions with grace and deeper faith.

Devotional Reflection

Doubt is not the opposite of faith. The opposite of faith is unbelief — the refusal to trust even in the face of evidence. Doubt is asking questions within faith, wrestling with God like Jacob at the river, refusing to let go until He blesses you.

Thomas doubted the resurrection. God's response was not to exclude him or to rebuke him sharply. Jesus came specifically to show Thomas His wounds. 'Reach here your finger, and look at My hands.' He met the doubt with evidence, with presence, and with patience.

John the Baptist, from prison, sent word asking Jesus: 'Are you the one, or do we look for another?' Even the one who prepared the way wrestled with doubt in the darkness of a prison cell. Jesus did not condemn him—He pointed him to the evidence: 'Tell John what you see and hear.'

Doubt that is brought to God honestly, that asks real questions and seeks real answers, often produces a deeper faith than was there before. The Psalmist in Psalm 73 nearly lost his faith—and then came back stronger, saying, 'Nevertheless I am always with You.'

Bring your doubts to God. He is not afraid of your questions.

A Prayer for Doubt

Lord, I believe — help my unbelief. I have questions I don't know how to answer, and there are places where my faith feels thin. I bring my doubts honestly to You. I trust that You are bigger than my questions and that You are not threatened by my wrestling. Reveal Yourself to me in this doubt. Lead me to the evidence of Your faithfulness. Deepen my faith through this season. Amen.
