John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16 — KJV
What This Verse Means
John 3:16 is often called the Gospel in a single sentence. Jesus speaks these words to Nicodemus, a Pharisee who came to him at night. The verse captures the entire story of Scripture — God's love, humanity's need, and the gift of eternal life through faith. The word 'so' doesn't mean 'so much' — it means 'in this way' — pointing to the specific manner of God's love: the giving of His Son.
Historical Context
Jesus is speaking to Nicodemus in Jerusalem, likely around 30 AD. Nicodemus was a member of the Sanhedrin — the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night, possibly to avoid being seen. This conversation produced some of the most quoted words in Christian history.
