Devotional Reflection

If you are in the darkness of depression, please know: you are not alone, you are not forgotten, and you have not been abandoned by God.

The Psalms contain some of the most raw and honest expressions of despair in all of literature. Psalm 88 ends without resolution: 'Darkness is my closest friend.' God did not edit those words out. He preserved them in Scripture as a gift to every person who has felt that darkness.

Elijah, after his greatest spiritual victory, sat under a tree and begged to die. God's response was not a lecture or a rebuke. He sent an angel who simply touched him and said, 'Arise and eat. The journey is too great for thee.' God met his physical exhaustion with bread and water, his emotional exhaustion with rest, and his spiritual exhaustion with presence.

Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus. God in the flesh, knowing He was about to raise the dead, still wept with those who wept. He enters our grief. He does not stand outside it.

Depression is an illness of the body, mind, and spirit. Please also seek professional help alongside prayer—God works through counselors and medicine as much as through miracles. You are worth fighting for.

A Prayer for Depression

God, I am in darkness and I don't know how to pray. I just cry out to You. I believe You see me in this pit. I believe Your mercies are new every morning even when I cannot feel them. Hold me when I cannot hold myself. Send help — in whatever form You choose. Let me not lose hope. The journey is too great for me, but not for You. Amen.
