Devotional Reflection
Addiction is one of the most powerful and painful prisons a human being can experience. Whether it is substances, behavior, or patterns of thinking, chains are real and breaking them requires power beyond our own. If you are fighting addiction, you are in a battle—and God fights with you.
Isaiah 61:1 declares that Jesus came to 'proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.' This was not metaphorical. Jesus came to bring actual freedom to actual captives. If you are captive to addiction, this promise is for you.
But freedom rarely comes in a single dramatic moment. It often comes through a community—'confess your faults one to another and pray for one another, that you may be healed' (James 5:16). God designed us to need each other. Please seek community, support, and professional help alongside your prayer and Scripture.
When you fall—and in recovery, falls happen—do not let the enemy use it to condemn you into giving up. 'A righteous man falls seven times and rises again' (Proverbs 24:16). The fall is not the end. Rising is the story.
God's power is greater than any stronghold. He is for you. He has not given up.
A Prayer for Addiction
Lord, I am fighting a battle I cannot win on my own. I need Your power. Break the chains that bind me. Send people into my life who will walk with me in this. When I am tempted, make a way of escape. When I fall, be the God who lifts me up again. I believe that You are greater than this addiction. I choose freedom today. Amen.
