Devotional Reflection

Gratitude is perhaps the most transformative spiritual practice available to us. Not because it changes our circumstances, but because it changes how we see them. When we cultivate thankfulness, we shift our focus from what is lacking to what has been given.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 commands us to give thanks 'in everything'—not for everything, but in everything. There is a difference. We do not thank God for suffering. But we can find Him present within it, and be grateful for that presence.

In Philippians 4:6, thanksgiving is tied directly to peace. When we bring our requests to God 'with thanksgiving,' the peace of God follows. Gratitude is not a spiritual trick—it is an act of remembering that God has been faithful before and will be faithful again.

The one leper who returned to thank Jesus (Luke 17) received something the others didn't: a direct encounter with Jesus and the words, 'Your faith has made you whole.' Gratitude opens us to deeper encounter with God.

Start small. Name three things you are grateful for today. Not grand things—simple ones. Sunlight. A warm drink. A person who cares. Each one is a fingerprint of a God who provides.

A Prayer for Gratitude

Father, open my eyes to the gifts You pour into every day. Forgive me for the times I have focused on what I lack rather than what You have given. I thank You for Your presence, for grace, for another day, for hope. Cultivate a genuinely thankful heart in me that praises You in all seasons. You are good, and Your mercy endures forever. Amen.
