New Beginnings

Standing at the threshold of something new.

New beginnings are exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. Whether you are stepping into marriage, welcoming a new baby, starting over in a new city, beginning a new career, or simply turning a page on who you used to be β€” God is a God of new things, and He goes before you into every fresh start you are brave enough to take.

A Prayer for This Season

Lord, I am standing at a threshold β€” one foot in the past and one foot in the new thing You are doing. I am excited and terrified and grateful and overwhelmed, sometimes all at once. Thank You that You go before me into every new beginning. Thank You that Your mercies are new every morning in this new season. Give me the courage to step forward fully, not looking over my shoulder at what I am leaving. Help me to trust You with the parts of this new chapter I cannot yet see. And in the moments when the newness feels like too much β€” when the unfamiliar feels threatening β€” remind me that You have been here before me, and You will be with me wherever I go. Amen.

Scripture for This Season

β€œRemember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.”

Isaiah 43:18-19

KJV

God announces new things before they are visible β€” He is already making a way in what looks like wilderness to you.

β€œAnd the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.”

Deuteronomy 31:8

KJV

The LORD goes before you β€” the new territory you are entering, He has already entered first.

β€œHave not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

Joshua 1:9

KJV

God's command to Joshua at the edge of the Promised Land β€” courage is possible because His presence is guaranteed.

β€œIt is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Lamentations 3:22-23

KJV

New mercies are already waiting for you in every new morning of this new season.

β€œTrust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Proverbs 3:5-6

KJV

In the unknown territory of new beginnings, surrendering understanding to God is what opens the path forward.

β€œFor I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

Jeremiah 29:11

KJV

God's thoughts toward you in this new chapter are full of peace, hope, and a future β€” He knows where this is going.

β€œBeing confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

Philippians 1:6

KJV

The God who began the work in you will complete it β€” your new beginning is part of an unfinished story He is telling.

β€œTherefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

2 Corinthians 5:17

KJV

The ultimate new beginning has already happened in you β€” your new chapter in life echoes the new creation you already are.

β€œAnd we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28

KJV

Everything that led you to this new beginning β€” including the difficult parts β€” is being woven into something good.

β€œThe steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.”

Psalm 37:23

KJV

Each step into your new season is ordered by God, who delights in leading you on this path.

5-Day Mini Devotional

There is something startling in how God introduces His new thing in Isaiah 43. He says: stop looking backward. Do not remember the former things. Which is remarkable, because the former things He is referring to were the Exodus β€” arguably the greatest miracle in Israel's history. God is saying: the new thing I am doing is so much larger than the greatest thing you have seen before that I need you to stop looking at it and look forward instead.

Whatever your new beginning is β€” marriage, a city, a career, a baby, a fresh start β€” it is full of uncertainty. You cannot see the shape of it yet. The path is not clear. And God says: I will make a way in the wilderness. Rivers in the desert. The new thing will spring forth in the exact place that looks most impossible.

New beginnings require a specific kind of faith: the faith to stop looking backward long enough to see what God is doing forward. Not to forget the past β€” but to release your grip on it enough to reach for what is ahead.

God is already at work in your new beginning. The way is already being made. Can you see it?

Prayer

Lord, help me to release the former things long enough to see the new thing You are doing. I confess that I keep looking backward when You are moving forward. Open my eyes to what You are already making in this new season. Amen.

Journal Prompt

What from your past are you having the hardest time releasing as you step into this new beginning? Why is it hard to let go?

Practical Steps for This Season

  • 1.

Write a 'threshold prayer' β€” a specific prayer marking this new beginning, naming what you are stepping away from and what you are stepping into, and asking for God's blessing on the new season.

  • 2.

Find one or two people who have walked a similar new beginning before you, and ask them what they wish they had known at the start.

  • 3.

Identify the one fear that is most loudly trying to stop you from fully embracing this new season, and bring it specifically to God in prayer.

  • 4.

Establish one new spiritual rhythm for this new season β€” a new prayer practice, a new Scripture reading plan, a new community of faith. New seasons call for renewed practices.

  • 5.

Give yourself grace for the adjustment period. New beginnings feel uncomfortable before they feel natural. The discomfort of newness is not a sign you made a mistake.
