Burnout & Exhaustion
Running on empty and needing permission to rest.
Burnout is not weakness β it is what happens when a faithful person gives more than they have for too long. Whether you are a caregiver, a minister, a parent, or simply someone who has been holding everything together, this season is God's invitation to stop, be held, and receive rest that only He can give.
A Prayer for This Season
Lord, I come to You completely empty β and I am learning that this might be exactly where You want me. I have been giving and serving and holding things together for so long, and I have nothing left. Forgive me for equating my worth with my output. Thank You that You do not love me more when I am productive and less when I am depleted. I receive Your invitation to come away and rest β to stop performing and start being held. Restore my soul the way only You can. Renew my strength as I wait on You. Let me find in this season of emptiness a deeper dependence on You than I have ever known before. Amen.
Scripture for This Season
βCome unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.β
Matthew 11:28-30
KJV
Jesus personally invites the exhausted to come to Him β not perform for Him β and promises rest for the soul.
βHast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.β
Isaiah 40:28-31
KJV
God never burns out, and He promises to renew strength specifically to those who are faint and have no might left.
βHe maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul.β
Psalm 23:2-3
KJV
The Good Shepherd restores souls β He leads the exhausted sheep to rest and restoration.
βAnd as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.β
1 Kings 19:5-6
KJV
God's response to Elijah's burnout was not rebuke but tender provision β food, water, and sleep.
βAnd he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.β
Mark 6:31
KJV
Jesus called His disciples away from busyness to rest β He values your rest as much as your work.
βIt is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.β
Psalm 127:2
KJV
God gives sleep as a gift to His beloved β rest is an act of trust, not laziness.
βAnd he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.β
2 Corinthians 12:9
KJV
Our weakness becomes the very place where Christ's strength is displayed most powerfully.
βAnd let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.β
Galatians 6:9
KJV
Paul's acknowledgment that weariness in doing good is real β and that the harvest is coming.
βTruly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.β
Psalm 62:1
KJV
Silence and waiting on God alone is itself a form of restoration for the burned-out soul.
βAnd he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.β
Exodus 33:14
KJV
God's personal promise to give rest β not just permission to rest, but His presence accompanying it.
5-Day Mini Devotional
There is a moment in the Gospels that stops me every time I read it. The disciples have just returned from a mission trip, full of stories and exhausted to the bone. People are pressing in on every side β so many that they cannot even stop to eat. And Jesus, the Son of God who had more work to do than any person in history, says to them: Come away. Rest a while.
Not 'push through.' Not 'you'll rest when the work is done.' Rest a while.
If Jesus called His disciples to rest before the work was finished, He is calling you to the same. The work will still be there. The needs will still exist. But you are not a machine with an unlimited fuel supply. You are a person made of flesh and soul, and both require care.
The fact that you are burned out likely means you have been giving faithfully for a very long time. That is something to honor, not shame. But the answer to faithful giving is not more giving β it is receiving. Receiving rest, receiving grace, receiving the replenishment that only God can give.
Today, you don't need to solve the burnout. You just need to accept the invitation. Come away. Rest a while. He is waiting for you in the quiet.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I am tired β more tired than I know how to say. Thank You for not shaming me for it. You called Your disciples to rest and I believe You are calling me too. Help me to accept this invitation and come away with You today. Amen.
Journal Prompt
When did you last feel truly rested β not just physically but spiritually and emotionally? What would it take to get there again?
Practical Steps for This Season
- 1.
Identify and protect one block of time each day β even 20 minutes β that is completely unproductive. No devices, no tasks. Just stillness before God.
- 2.
Tell one trusted person how depleted you truly are. Burnout thrives in secrecy and isolation β bringing it into the light begins to break its power.
- 3.
Audit your commitments honestly. Ask: which of these is God's assignment for me right now, and which have I taken on from guilt, fear, or people-pleasing? Begin the process of gracefully releasing what is not yours to carry.
- 4.
Practice Sabbath β one full day of rest each week, as God commanded. This is not optional or a reward for finishing your work. It is a spiritual rhythm built into creation.
- 5.
Seek professional support if needed. A therapist, counselor, or spiritual director can provide a safe space to process burnout. Asking for help is an act of wisdom, not weakness.
