Day 11 of 14
The Table in the Wilderness
“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”
Psalm 23:5 — KJV
The image in Psalm 23:5 is almost startling in its specificity. God does not wait until the enemies are gone to prepare the table. He sets it in their presence. The feast happens in the middle of the threat, not after it has passed.
Grief is one of those enemies — not the only one, but one of the real ones. And the promise here is not that God will remove your grief before He feeds you. It is that He will feed you in the middle of it.
Grace still comes to us in the valley. There are still gifts — small, sometimes almost imperceptible — even in the darkest seasons. A morning when you woke up and the weight felt slightly lighter than the day before. A conversation that reminded you you are not alone. A verse that found you at exactly the right moment. A small, ordinary beauty that caught you off guard — light through a window, a song, the smell of rain — and reminded you that the world still contains goodness.
These are the table set in the presence of your grief. They are not proof that the grief is over. They are proof that God is still providing, even here.
The anointing with oil was a gesture of honor and care — something done for honored guests, for healing, for commissioning. Even in the valley, God honors you. He does not see you as a casualty of your grief. He sees you as someone still worthy of care and tending.
Look for the table today. It may be small. It may be hidden beneath the grief. But it is there.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, I want to have eyes today to see the table You have set, even in the middle of all of this. I know the grief is still here. I am not asking for it to be removed today. But help me to notice the gifts — the small, tender provisions You have placed in the middle of this hard season. Let me receive them as exactly what they are: signs that You are still here, still providing, still caring for me. Anoint me with Your presence today. Amen.
Journal Prompt
“In the middle of this difficult season, what is one small gift — however ordinary or easily overlooked — that you can identify as God's provision? Write about it in as much detail as you can.”
