Day 6 of 14
The Shepherd in the Dark
“He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.”
Isaiah 40:11 — KJV
A shepherd does not abandon the flock when the path becomes dark. He does not wait at the edge of the valley for the sheep to find their own way through and emerge on the other side. He goes in. He walks the darkness with them. He uses his staff not to drive them forward but to guide them, to steady them when the ground shifts, to keep them close.
Isaiah's image of the shepherd is one of the gentlest in all of Scripture. He gathers the lambs 'with his arm' — not with authority or command, but with the physical tenderness of an embrace. He carries them 'in his bosom,' close to his chest, where they can feel his warmth and hear his heartbeat. And with those who are weak — 'those that are with young' — he does not push the pace. He leads 'gently.'
God knows that you cannot move at full speed right now. He knows that grief makes every step slower, every hill steeper, every ordinary task feel like a mountain. He is not demanding that you keep up with a pace you cannot sustain. He is matching His stride to yours.
The word 'gently' is doing enormous work in this verse. It tells us something about the character of the God who is walking with you. He is not exasperated by your weakness. He is not measuring your recovery against a timeline. He sees how heavy you are carrying, and He adjusts.
You are being carried today, even if it does not feel that way. The Shepherd has not moved on without you.
Today’s Prayer
Shepherd, I am so tired. I feel like one of the lambs who cannot keep up, who has fallen behind, who is too exhausted to find their own way. Gather me. Carry me in this season the way Your Word promises — gently, close, without demanding more than I can give. Let me feel the warmth of Your nearness today. I am trusting that You have not let me fall behind. Amen.
Journal Prompt
“In what area of your grief do you feel most like you 'cannot keep up' — with healing, with hope, with daily life? What would it look like to let God carry that particular thing for you today?”
