Day 2 of 14
The Valley Has a Name
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
Psalm 23:4 — KJV
David did not pretend the valley was not a valley. He did not call it a mild inconvenience, or a season of adjustment, or a time of transition. He named it plainly: the valley of the shadow of death.
There is something quietly powerful in that honesty. He looked at what he was walking through and called it what it was. And only then — after naming it — did he say: I will fear no evil.
Sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is stop softening the language we use for our own suffering. What happened to you was hard. What you are walking through is dark. The valley is a valley. You do not have to call it something smaller to make God look bigger.
What is striking about Psalm 23 is the word 'through.' Not 'into.' Not 'beside.' Through. The valley is something to be walked through, which means it has an other side. But it also means you are in the middle of it right now — and that is allowed. You do not have to rush to the other side before you are ready.
God did not promise that His people would never walk through dark places. He promised that they would not walk through them alone. 'For thou art with me' — not 'for thou hast removed the darkness,' but 'thou art with me in it.'
Name what you are carrying today. Do not make it smaller. Give it its full, honest name. And then hear this: you are not alone in it. The Shepherd walks beside you in the valley. He is not waiting for you at the exit. He is here, now, with you in the dark.
Today’s Prayer
God, I want to be honest with You about what I am carrying. This is grief. This is loss. This is a darkness I did not choose and do not know how to navigate. I am naming it because I trust that You can hold the full weight of it — that I do not have to minimize my pain to come to You. Walk with me through this valley. I cannot see the other side, but I believe You can. Amen.
Journal Prompt
“If you could name what you are walking through right now — the full, honest name of it — what would that be? Write it down without softening it.”
